NEW! SWEET GEORGIA SPINNING FIBERS

We just received Sweet Georgia's gorgeous spinning fibers! The colors are breath takingly beautiful! We have 15 different colorways of her super soft, superwash BFL. I loved these new fibers so much, I decided to take one for a quick spin! I picked the colorway called Tapestry. I chose to spin a slub yarn for an easy relaxed spin. I plied the yummy slub yarn with a gorgeous singles commercial yarn, which we carry at The Noble Thread, Millefiori baby by Lang. Before plying, I applied a little bit of extra twist to the commercial yarn. The result? Absolutely gorgeous and so easy to spin! If you want to lean how to spin, we are offering classes at The Noble Thread in Wilmington! #SweetGeorgia

MAKE #5: THE PERKY SNOOD

Here is February Make #5 for The Noble Thread. Skye was the crocheter, and of course the model for this great piece of vintage wear! I love my short hair, but seeing this snood, I wish I had my long hair back! To recap, Skye used the Perky Snood pattern, and one skein of Blackberry Ridge yarn, a wonderful fingering, woolen spun yarn which we carry in more than 50 colors! #perkysnood #Vintage #pattern #crochet #BlackberryRidge #fingering #woolen #spun

SWEATER KNITTING: CURVO

I started working on a new project, the Curvo Sweater by Sachiko Burgin. The pattern calls for an Aran weight. I chose to use Cascade's Eco Cloud, a wonderful chainette yarn, which we carry in a range of undyed colors at The Noble Thread, 70% undyed Merino Wool / 30% undyed Baby Alpaca. The natural colors are so beautiful, and the alpaca, give the yarn a very subtle halo. I fell in love with this pattern. The sweater is knit sideways, and I just love the the curved edges. The pattern is very easy to follow. If you have never knit one, this would be a very good first sweater. And the aran weight makes it a quick project! #Curvo #Sweater #knitting #sideways #Cascade #yarn #EcoCloud #Aran #eas

FEBRUARY MAKE #4: REYNA SHAWL

The Reyna Shawl is finished, and is now sitting in the shop. This was a joy and a snap to knit. And the yarn... Jilly in the Chili colorway by Dream in color! The pattern was so easy to knit, and at the same time beautifully textured. Garter bands, and 2 row lace mesh. It is hard to imagine anything easier for a shawl. The yarn, Jilly, gives the shawl wonderful drape, allowing the light to play with the textures. The pattern was very well written, and so easy to follow. I would definitely recommend it if you want to knit an easy, almost mindless shawl. I might have to knit another one in one of the other 11 colors of JIlly we have in the shop! The blue one in the foreground would look wonde

NEW YARN: BAAH LA JOLLA

We just added BAAH's hand painted yarns to our collection of fingering yarns! Baah La Jolla is hand-dyed in California. It is 100% Superwash merino. Each skein is 400 yards of fingering weight yarn. Perfect for shawls, and socks. Neither words nor pictures will do the yarn justice, but I will try my best to describe the beauty if these yarns. The yarn has a wonderful sheen, and your knitting will drape beautifully once blocked. Any lace shawl knit or crocheted with Baah La Jolla would just glow. The colors are deeply saturated, and range from tone on tone to variegated. We have 12 colorways in the shop right now, and to be honest, I can hardly wait to work on a new project with Baah. #Baah #

DREAM IN COLOR JILLY

Now that the Beeswax Hat is finished, I am on to the next project. (Those of you who know me know that I only work on one project at a time. ) This time, I chose to work with one of the newest yarn, Dream in Color Jilly. Jilly is a singles yarn, round and soft in a fingering weight, and 100% Superwash Merino. The yarns are hand-dyed, and the colors glorious. This particular colorway is Chili. It is a lovely tone on tone yarn with a wonderful glow. To showcase this yarn, I picked the Reyna Shawl pattern byr Noora Laivola, which is a free pattern on Ravelry. The pattern is a triangular shawl, and alternates rows of simple garter stitch, and mesh. This is going to be perfect to wear in the spri

FEBRUARY MAKE #3: THE BEESWAX HAT

The Beeswax Hat is finished! What a fun pattern this was! And is this texture not amazing? To recap, the pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry, and is well worth purchasing. The directions are perfect, and crystal clear, making knitting the hat a breeze. I used Cascade 220 Superwash sport for the hat and I very happy with the choice. ( We carry Cascade 220 Sport in the shop in over 20 yummy colors!) I absolutely recommend you give this hat a try. And if you feel you need a little help with it, no problem, we are here to help. #BeeswaxHat #Ravelry #patter #knitting #hat #cables #Cascade #220 #superwash #sport #TheNobleThread #colors

THE PERKY SNOOD - A VINTAGE CROCHET PATTERN

Skye loves vintage clothing, and vintage accessories. So today, she grabbed a skein of Blacberry Ridge Farm fingering yarn in a fabulous merlot color, and set out to crochet The Perky Snood. I asked her for some feedback on her experience crocheting the snood. Caroline: How did you pick the pattern? Skye: I wanted something simple. Some of the snoods can look very overdone. I wanted something classic. Caroline: DId you have to search hard? Do you have a favorite source for vintage patterns? Skye: The search was easy. There is a very large community of vintage pattern fans. With the internet, all you do is type vintage pattern and whatever you are looking for. There is a wealth of free vintag

Beeswax Hat in Progress

After finishing the wonderful Baby Surprise Jacket, I had to pick a fun pattern, and a fun pattern I found! The Beeswax Hat by Amy Van de Laar. The pattern is available on Ravelry, and we have just received Cascade's 220 Sport in the shop with 22 colors to choose from! The hat has a fun all over cable pattern reminiscent of beehives. To knit this gorgeous hat, I chose to use Cascade's Superwash 220 Sport in a yummy, rich yellow and a size 6 needle. I am not yet done with the pattern but so far, I have to say I love it. The pattern comes with both charted and written out instructions. The directions are clear and even show you how to knit the cables without a cable needle, making the whole ca

I DREAM IN COLOR!

Look what arrived at the shop today! Dream in Color Yarns! Today, we received Smooshy, a fabulous sock weight yarn in 12 different colorways, each more delicious than the last. Smooshy is a plump, super soft superwash 100% Merino wool fingering yarn, hand-dyed in the US by Nancy and Veronica, two long-time friends. Smooshy is perfect for socks, scarves, shawls, and so soft you can even use it for baby sweaters. I am going to be knitting a pair of socks with it. I am thinking of the Dancing Rainbow Pattern. We also received Dream in Color's Jilly, a stunning singles yarn in 12 luscious colors. Jilly is perfect for shawls and scarves. It so soft and lustrous! Projects knit with Jilly are ligh

WEAVING IN PROGRESS

Today was so cold that I started weaving a throw for the shop. I know winter will come and go, but the beauty of weaving is that even when it is not cold anymore, it can just sit there to be admired and petted! For his throw I warped the 32" Ashford rigid heddle loom which is on display at The Noble Thread. I picked four colors of Berrocco Vintage for the warp. I selected the 7.5 dent heddle. The same yarns are used in the weft, and repeated in the same order, with the red being dominant. The weave is a plain weave, my favorite. I can hardly wait to work on it today! #rididheddleloom #Ashford #32 #BerroccoVintage #plainweave #handwoven #throw

FEBRUARY MAKE #2: EZ'S BABY SURPRISE JACKET

I am done knitting Elizabeth Zimmermann's Baby Surprise Jacket. It is a newborn size and took 1 1/2 skeins of Spincycle Yarns' Dyed in the Wool in the Rusted Rainbow Colorway. I picked red wood buttons to finish the Jacket. This has to be one of the most magical and enjoyable patterns. The visible increase and decrease sections added dimension to the jacket, while allowing the self striping yarn to do its thing! Follow the directions and watch the magic happen! If you know how to do the knit stitch, and you know how to decrease and how to increase, you can knit your own Baby Surprise Jacket. All you need is the pattern, beautiful yarn to make an heirloom jacket, needles, stitch markers, and

ELIZABETH ZIMMERMANN'S BABY SURPRISE

There are cult movies, and then there is Elizabeth Zimmermann's Baby Surprise Jacket, the absolute cult knitting pattern. The baby sweater is knit in one piece, in garter stitch. The pattern which we carry at The Noble Thread, gives gauge options, and size options from baby to adult, and gives you the original instructions, or the whole jacket row by row. For my jacket, I decided to knit a newborn size using the lovely self-striping Spincycle Dyed in the Wool (2 skeins are enough). I thought the handspun look, along with the colors would make the pattern sing, making this a very special gift for a new baby. My jacket is knit at a gauge of 6 stitches per inch. Because I am knitting at the st

WE WELCOME ASHFORD

I am so happy to announce that we are now have Ashford wheels and looms at The Noble Thread. Here is the beautiful Ashford Joy 2 with double treadle. This wheel is very special to me. I saw an Ashford joy for the first time 12 years. I lived in California at the time, it was a Saturday, at the Farmers' Market. In the shade of an oak tree, there was a lady spinning on a Joy. I fell in love with the wheel at that very moment. To this day I still find it one of the most graceful wheels. To top it all, it is compact, foldable, portable, and comes with it own backpack. Even though the wheel is small it can accomplish a lot, and has a great range of ratios: 6, 8, 12 and 14 to 1. If you have alway

FEBRUARY MAKE #1

The Noble Thread would not be a yarn shop without knitting happening. It is only February 6, and I am ready to share my February Make #1 with you! This adorable Irish moss stitch baby jacket was lovely and oh so quick to knit. First the yarn: Sublime's Evie in a lovely soft pink fondant colorway. The yarn is 94% cotton and 6% nylon. The yarn is one of the softest I have ever knitted with. The jacket was knit on US 9 needles. Then the pattern: Sublime's Evie pattern book, the Irish Moss Jacket. The pattern was really easy to follow. I would rate it as a first sweater project as there is so little shaping. The jacket is knit in pieces and then seamed. The collar is picked up at the neck and
