There are cult movies, and then there is Elizabeth Zimmermann's Baby Surprise Jacket, the absolute cult knitting pattern.
The baby sweater is knit in one piece, in garter stitch. The pattern which we carry at The Noble Thread, gives gauge options, and size options from baby to adult, and gives you the original instructions, or the whole jacket row by row.
For my jacket, I decided to knit a newborn size using the lovely self-striping Spincycle Dyed in the Wool (2 skeins are enough). I thought the handspun look, along with the colors would make the pattern sing, making this a very special gift for a new baby. My jacket is knit at a gauge of 6 stitches per inch.
Because I am knitting at the store where a lot is happening, I decided to follow the row by row directions and use a row counter. For those of you familiar with the pattern, as you can see from the picture I am past the half way point and on my way to the finish line!
I can hardly wait to be finished with the knitting, and see the magic happen when the little sweater appears!
